You’re back! How I missed you. Hope your trip was phenomenal. Your goals are on 🔥. Here is a free association of books that came to mind or that I have read recently and might recommend that align with your challenges. If you have not read all the Katie Kitamura or Susan Choi, maybe add them to your list. I think you might like INTIMACIES if you have not read it yet and I will be writing about AUDITION which comes out Tuesday. Kitamura makes me think of Javier Marias, so if you have not read BERTA ISLAS that would be a translated book that I think may be over 500 pages. Recent Latine books I have read and might recommend are CATALINA and SOLITO.

I have not posted goals or made them official but I am also trying to read at least one book I already have every month and I also have been reading a classic every month.

I know SOLITO will make me cry but I should read it. CATALINA has gotten so many mixed reviews I figured I could depriortize it but maybe the fall when I tend to want a campus novel

Good tears! And yes, I cannot give CATALINA an unequivocal rec— I felt too old for it— but I am a sucker for a campus novel!

💗 thank you. I've only read A SEPARATION but I want to read more Kitamura for sure. I did not like TRUST EXERCISE although I appreciated the way she played with form but her backlist appeals to me. I've never read any Javier Maras either so you've given me a lot to work with 🤓

Okay, not to monopolize the convo but have you read Nnedi Okorafor? Black woman from Chicago. DEATH OF THE AUTHOR is the first book with sprayed edges I have purchased…

If only I could be so organized!! I completely agree about library holds running my reading life. But I’m also addicted to used bookstores… so I finally had to just cancel all my library holds and focus on the 100+ books I own 😅😅

I am also addicted to used bookstores and far too scared to count how many unread books I own but it's at least 100 as well...😅

I love reading goals and challenges! I really need to read what I own... truly an issue for me haha. Re: Chicago writers, I would guess that you've read all Nella Larsen? (She didn't have many books) I want to also read some 500+ page books! Unfortunately it looks like I read a 448 page book earlier this year, and the new Susan Choi is also 448. So close hahaha. Kintu has been screaming at me from my shelf for years now and I just checked... 443. I will join you for The Parisian, though! Confirmed 500+ I really went on a journey of my shelves after reading your newlsetter.... :)

The 440-480 books infuriate me lol just let me get to 500! That happened to me with The Magnificent Ruins. I lovee Nella Larsen and hope to re read Quicksand this year along with a collection of her other writings 🤞🏾would love to read The Parisian together I'll DM!

I love reading about how you approach reading! I always get new ideas. I have definitely been (mostly accidentally) reading at least one 500+ page book a month for the last year or so, and it’s mostly been satisfying - especially when I drift toward classics or highly praised works (and not new releases ). Looking forward to all these April posts!

Yes! He got on my radar last year or the year before because Anne Helen Petersen mentioned him and I couldn't believe I didn't know his name. Is Winter in the Blood your favorite? It's where I planned to start
